Educational messaging prompts patient counseling, naloxone dispensing at pharmacies

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (CARESOURCE PASSE) - Opioid addiction, overdoses and deaths continue to impact families across Arkansas which is why Çï¿ûapp PASSE is working with pharmacies across the state to increase dispensing and utilization of naloxone for at-risk members. Naloxone is a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and prevent overdose deaths.

The Arkansas Department of Health reports that Arkansas is the second highest state in the nation for opioid prescribing. And in 2021, there were 386 opioid overdose deaths in Arkansas, making up 61% of all drug overdoses in the state.

“This is about educating members and saving lives,” said David Donohue, market president, Çï¿ûapp Arkansas. “Çï¿ûapp PASSE is focused on the well-being of our members and acting as a strong partner to the state. Through this initiative we are prioritizing our members’ health and supporting existing state protocols to initiate, order and administer naloxone.”

Çï¿ûapp PASSE’s new initiative promotes naloxone distribution by sending pharmacists a real-time electronic message at the point of sale when they dispense any opioid or opioid-containing prescription reminding pharmacists to also consider providing naloxone. Çï¿ûapp PASSE’s research of its claim data shows that this kind of point-of-sale messaging has tripled naloxone dispensing since the launch of the initiative.

“Targeted messaging is effectively enhancing awareness and encouraging the prescribing and dispensing of naloxone, all while improving member understanding of the necessity and accessibility of this life-saving medication,” said Jessica Lawson, director of pharmacy, Çï¿ûapp Arkansas. “By collaborating with pharmacists and health care partners we are improving the health and safety of our members.”

In addition, Çï¿ûapp offers DisposeRx® drug disposal packets to all members free of charge. These packets promote the proper disposal of expired, unused or unneeded medications. Proper disposal helps prevent accidental ingestion, especially by children or pets. It also minimizes the risk of misuse or abuse, thereby safeguarding those at risk for potential addiction or harm.
